Benchmark is a free arts and cultural outreach program for young people in Melbourne’s West. Our Artist Facilitators support participants in a range of skill development including collaboration, songwriting, recording, production, rehearsing and performance.

Benchmark combines workshops sessions and events where participants’ passion for hip-hop and performance are welcomed, supported and celebrated. Benchmark is also a bridge for participants to access opportunities to collaborate on projects that address structural disadvantage and, improve health and wellbeing. Our Artist Facilitators, often have lived experience of structural disadvantage, and participants benefit from seeing role models from their own communities.

Benchmark seeks to engage, but is not exclusive too, young people from African and Pasifika communities. Initially starting in 2015 as a cultural outreach for African community members who use Maddern Square in Footscray as a gathering place. Benchmark, has developed since then into a platform co-created with participants to self-determine their own creative narratives that can be celebratory, political or about healing.

Benchmark takes place at 4pm to 6pm on Tuesdays at St Albans Community Centre and Thursdays at Melton Library and Learning Hub. For more information on how to participate contact Phil Pandongan: [email protected]
